To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, TRACY V. BUoKwAL- TER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain Improve ments in Buildings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates more particularly to improvements in the construction of buildings for the primary purposes of obtaining improved illumination while providing for the collection and discharge of snow and water.
In their preferred form, my improvements comprise oppositely inclined roof sections of different areas, in combination with Fink trusses for supporting them' and auxiliary trusses supported thereby for carrying extensions of the larger roof sectionsbeyond the apices of the Fink trusses to positions above the upper terminations of the oppositely inclined Smaller sections, and substantially vertical transparent constructions through which light is reflected from the outer reflecting surfaces of larger area to oppositely disposed inner reflecting surfaces and thence over the floor area. v
A desideratum attained by my said improvements is the eflicient and substantially uniform illumination of the interior of buildings by direct, supplemented by reflected light.
The accompanying drawing is a sectional elevation of a building embodying my improvements.
The building illustrated in the drawing comprises the usual floor 1, the walls 2 and 3 containing the glass constructions 2 and 3, and the columns 4 supporting the beams 5, an end section having the wall extensions 2 and 3 containing the glass constructions 2 and 3".
This structure carries the Fink trusses 6, I
on the upper cords 6 of which are built the auxiliary trusses 7, the latterhaving the upper cords'l' which are extensions of the upper cords 6 of the respective main trusses. Parallel roofs or roof sections 8, having external and internal reflecting surfaces 8 and 8 are carried on the cords 6" and 7, the outer surfaces 8 being provided satisfactorily by white asbestos roofing material and the inner surfaces 8 by a white coating of gypsum. Smaller parallel roof sections 9, inclined oppositely to the sections 5, are carried on the cords 6 below the trusses 7, the lower ends of adjacent sections 8 and 9 being joined to provide gutters or channels 10 for collecting snow and rain.
Windows 11 are disposed vertically or substantially vertically between the upper ends of the roof sections 8 and 9 carried by the same main trusses, the windows being carried by the trusses 6 and 7 and providing for the passage of direct and reflected light through the bulk of the area between the tops of said sections 8 and 9.
The elevated end section of the building comprisesa wall 11 containing the transparent or window section 11 substantially equal in area to the respective sections 11 and disposed between the bottoms of the ad jacent oppositely inclined sections 8 and 9. When a ray of light a strikes the outer surface of the right hand roof section 8, it is reflected thereby along the line a through the window 11 of the middle section against the inner surface of the roof 8 of such middle section, whence it is reflected along the line a" through the interior of the building to the floor 1. The effect is to light the entire interior surface of the building efficiently and thorouggly. aving described my invention, I claim 1. The combination with an inclined roof section provided with an interior reflecting surface, of an approximately vertical transparent structural section extending downwardly from'the upper end of said roof sec tion, and an inclined roof section provided with aneXteriOr reflecting surface adapted to reflect light through said transparent section against the reflecting surface first named.
2. The combination with an inclined roof section provided with an interior reflecting surface, of an approximately vertical transparent structural section extending downwardly from the upper end of said roof section, and a roof section substantially parallel and equal to said roof section first named, said roof section secondnamed having an exterior reflecting surface adapted to reflect light through said transparent section' against said.- refieeting surface first named.
3. The combination with a roof truss having oppositely inclined top chords, an auxiliary truss carried by said truss first named so that atop chord of said auxiliary truss is a continuation of a top chord of said truss first named, a roof section carried by said trusses, a second oppositely inclined roof section carried by said truss first namedbeneath said truss second named, and a substantially vertical transparent section carried by said trusses between the tops of said roof sections.

The combination of roof trusses each having oppositely inclined top chords and an .auxiliary truss disposed between the trusses aforesaid with a top chord in substantially continuous relation to a chord aforesaid, with inclined roof sections supported in substantially parallel relation by said trusses, an oppositely inclined smaller roof section supported by a truss aforesaid between said trusses first named, and an ap similarly to top chords of said main trusses,
with inclined roof sections supported respec tively by main and auxiliary trusses aforesaid, roof sections inclined oppositely to roof sections aforesaid and supported by said main trusses beneath said auxiliary trusses, and transparent sections supported by main and auxiliary trusses aforesaid b0- tween said oppositely inclined roof sections.
