Letters Patent No. 95,850, dated October 12, 1869 IMPROVEMENT IN DIES FOR MANUFACTURING LEAD PIPE The Schedule referred to xxl :hele Letten Patent and making part of 'che lame.
accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which drawing-e Figure 1 represents a vertical central seciion of this invention.
Figure 2 is aV plan or topview of the same.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in the combination of a loose core with a cylinder and ram, for the manufacture of pipes of A lead or other metal, in such a manner, that said core, being free to Inovewith the mass of metal under pressure, is relieved ofI the strain to which it would otherwise be exposed hy the fric-tion of the metal.
In machines for the manufacture 'of pipes of lead or other metals, the core is usually fastened to the ram or to thc cylinder which contains them-ass of mci'al froni 'which the pipes are to he made.
As the mass ofthe metal is tim-cd mit through tho annular spaco ihrmed hy the die ami core, said core is exposed to nheavy strain h v the friction of the metal upon it, and in many casos the coro (which is usually mode of stoci) is stretched und torn asnnder.
This disadvantage is oremome hy my invention, as rpresented in the drawings, in which thelctt-er A designates the cylimher;Y 1l, the ram; (l, vthe core; and D the head-block, which forms the guide for the core. Said cylinder is to he attached to the upper part or frame of a strong hydraulic or oiherpress, and the ram is attached t-o the follower-or plunger of such press.
The head-block D is held in position by strong hearings a., casi', or otherwise firmly attached to the cylinder, as shown in lig. 2 of the drawing, or-it may he sccnred by any other suitable means, suiiici'ently strong for the pressure to be brought 'against it,'and yet so construct-ed, that said head-block can be readily rc moved.
The head-block l) is pertnated with a hole to admit the core C, which is suspended from n cord passing over a pulley, and loa-ded with a balance-weight', or by any other suitable means, so that when sucient pressure is applied to the metal within the cylinder, to force it out through the die b, the core will he free to move with the meta-l, and not be subjected to the tension, which it would he if immovahly attached to the cylinder or ram. It is obrious that this plan of making pipe by press'-y nre over a loose core in a cylinder, may he applied to any arrangement of cylinder and ram tha-t may be dosired. 1
When the die is placed in the end of the cylinder opposite the ram, the-core will he suspendedor held within the ram, so 'as to project through thedie in the cylinder, and it is immaterial, except for convenience, whether the pipe ho discharged upward or downward.
The metal may hc poured into 'the cylinder and around the core in a tinid sta-te, and allowed to set or become solid, or it may he castin a separate vessehand placed within thc cylinder, and then thefeole may he inserted and held in its proper position', and the metal be pressed from the cylinder through the die.
Having thus described my invcntiomV Wha-t I claim as new, and desire to secure by Leb..
ters Patent, is- '.lhe combination of a loosel core with a cylinder and ram, for the 'ma-nuthcture of pipes, Substantiall) as herein described.
